Chapter5

—What kind of accountant do I want to become?

Becoming a Future Professional

At the beginning of this unit, I believed that becoming a successful accountant was mainly about developing technical expertise, achieving strong academic results, and obtaining professional qualifications. While I still see these as important foundations, my understanding of the profession has changed significantly throughout the semester.

Through discussions about financial reporting, auditing, sustainability, employability, and artificial intelligence, I realised that accounting is not simply about applying rules or producing reports. It is about helping people make better decisions in situations that are often uncertain, complex, and influenced by competing interests. Professional responsibility now means more than technical accuracy. It involves acting ethically, questioning assumptions, considering stakeholder perspectives, and recognising the limitations of information before reaching conclusions.

My understanding of accountability has also evolved. Previously, I viewed accountability as taking responsibility for completing assigned tasks correctly. Now, I believe accountability also involves being prepared to justify professional judgements and decisions, particularly when there is no single correct answer. As I learned throughout this unit, professional judgement often requires balancing competing viewpoints and making decisions despite uncertainty.

Perhaps the biggest change in my thinking relates to long-term value creation. Earlier in my studies, I often associated value with financial performance and profitability. Today, I see long-term value as something broader that includes sustainability, responsible governance, stakeholder trust, and an organisation's ability to adapt to future challenges.

Looking ahead, I aspire to become an accountant who combines technical competence with critical thinking, ethical judgement, and strong communication skills. To achieve this goal, I plan to continue pursuing professional qualifications such as ACCA, gain practical experience through graduate opportunities, strengthen my digital and AI capabilities, and continue developing the interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.

Looking back at the person I was in Week 1, I realise that my greatest growth has not been learning new accounting techniques. It has been learning how to think more critically, adapt more confidently, and approach professional challenges with greater curiosity and responsibility. That, for me, is what becoming a future professional truly means.
